Perianal abscess refers to the infection around the anal region, with formation of pus. This is usually due to the blockage and infection of the glands located there. It may also be a cause or a result of a fistula-in-ano (FIA).
Common symptoms of perianal abscess may include:
- Painful lump around the anus, which may be hard or boggy ( depending on how deep is the infection
- Fever
- Anal Pain affecting bowel movement
- Overlying skin may be red
- Purulent discharge if the abscess has broken open
Risk factors include diabetic or immunocompromised patients.
Anal pain is not normal and usually indicates a pathology. A clinical examination will give the diagnosis and differentiate from other common perianal conditions such as anal fissure, FIA, piles, and anal cancer. Treatment comprises of minor surgery to drain the pus and clean out the abscess cavity.
